Types of Poem

Narrative

Definition: A poem that tells a story in first person

Examples:
"IS anybody there?" said the Traveller,
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence chomped the grasses
Of the forest's ferny floor.
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
Above the traveller's head:
And he smote upon the door a second time;
"Is there anybody there?" he said.
But no one descended to the Traveller;
No head from the leaf-fringed sill
Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes,
Where he stood perplexed and still.
But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair
That goes down to the empty hall,
Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken
By the lonely Traveller's call.
And he felt in his heart their strangeness,
Their stillness answering his cry,
While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,
'Neath the starred and leafy sky;
For he suddenly smote the door, even
Louder, and lifted his head:-
"Tell them I came, and no one answered,
That I kept my word," he said.
Never the least stir made the listeners,
Though every word he spake
Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house
From the one man left awake:
Aye, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,
And the sound of iron on stone,
And how the silence surged softly backward,
When the plunging hoofs were gone.

Balad

Definition: Poem that are song like often goes about sadness, love, betrayal. Tells regular poems that can be filled with rythm and repeated words. considered a Narrarative-ish poem

Example:
I'll tell a tale, a thrilling tale of love beyond compare
I knew a lad not long ago more gorgeous than any I've seen.
And in his eyes I found my self a'falling in love with the swain.
Oh, the glorious fellow I met by the ocean with eyes of deep-sea green!
He was a rugged sailor man with eyes of deep-sea green,
And I a maid, a tavern maid! Whose living was serving beer.
So with a kiss and with a wave, off on his boat he sailed
And left me on the dock, the theif! Without my heart, oh dear!
And with a heart that's lost at sea, I go on living still.
I still am now still serving beer in that tavern by the sea.
And though the pay check's still the same, the money won't go as far
For now I feed not just myself, but my little one and me!
So let that be a lesson, dear, and keep your heart safely hid.
I gave mine to a sailing thief with gorgeous eyes of green.
Save yours for a sweeter lad who makes the land his home.
Ah me! If only I'd never met that sailor by the sea!

Win Win Win them all but you never lose
Should have known, you were cheating from the first game
Have you cheat code open, Why where they open
I give you my game boy and you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash you did.
You give me Starcraft 2
That’s all I ever ask, what you don’t understand
I’d crush my Xbox for ya
Throw my Wii out of a car for ya
Step on my DSi for ya
I will do these things for ya
I will go through all this trouble
Throw my Mac Book in front of a train
Yes, I will do that ya babe, cause you can’t do the same
Call of Duty Black Ops
Beat me till I broke
Tell the Cheater I said “Yo”
When will you quit and start to play
Cheater, Cheater
That’s just who you are
You’ll say “ In your face”
So get out of my face and off my room
I give you PSP and you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, yes you did.
You give me Warcraft 3
That’s all I ever ask, what you don’t understand
I’d Melt my iPod for ya
Blender up my iPhone for ya
smash my iPad 2 for ya
I will do these things for ya
I will go through all this trouble
take a bullet straight through my game
Yes, I will do that your ya babe, cause you can’t do the same
IF my PlayStations on FIRE
Oh watch it burn down in flame
You said I cheated but
You’re a liar cause I never
Ever ever did babe
But my Baby
I’d still crush my Xbox for ya
Throw my Wii out of a car for ya
Step on my DSi for ya
I will do these things for ya
I will go through all this trouble
take a bullet straight through my game
Yes, I will do that your ya babe, cause you can’t do the same
No you wont do the same
You never do the same
OH you can’t do the same
No No No.
Sonnets

Definition: A specific type of lyric poems that is always fourteen lines long and wrtten in iambic pentameter.

Example:
From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thy self thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel:
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament,
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content,
And, tender churl, mak'st waste in niggarding:
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.
